Science & The Bible

Before we delve into this topic, it may be essential to recognise that science constantly evolves. Discoveries often reshape what we once believed true. In contrast, the Bible remains unchanged. While science is valuable, much of it today is funded by private corporations and large multinational companies.

With shareholders, employees, directors, and entire industries to protect, is it naive to think that research contradicting their interests would be widely accepted?

Or would it be more logical to believe that Studies that align with their products and agendas will be more favoured, influencing what gets presented as science or scientific facts?

Some claim the Bible has also been corrupted over time—but this is not the case. The Bible is the most scrutinised and carefully examined text in history. Any changes or distortions would be quickly noticed and challenged. Its preservation is unparalleled. 

So, does science disprove Scripture? I would say no. While some scientific theories, seem to contradict the Bible, they do not disprove it. There are many topics we could explore—from evolution to the age of the earth—but today, we’ll focus on the theory of evolution, which was brought into mainstream thought by Charles Darwin.

Does the Fossil Record Support Large-Scale Evolution?

For Darwin’s theory to hold, there would need to be solid evidence of large-scale evolutionary changes across species. However, not only is there a lack of fossil evidence for such massive transformations, but even the so-called “transitional fossils” offer little undisputed proof of one kind turning into another. Here are three commonly cited examples:

1. Archaeopteryx (Dinosaur to Bird?)

   • Claim: Seen as a transitional form with feathers and teeth.

   • Counterpoint: Archaeopteryx had all the features of modern birds—flight feathers, a wishbone, and a perching foot. Fossils of fully developed birds have even been found in older rock layers, suggesting it wasn’t a transitional form, but rather an extinct bird species.

2. Australopithecus (Ape to Human?)

   • Claim: “Lucy” (Australopithecus afarensis) is believed to have walked upright like early humans.

   • Counterpoint: Studies show that Lucy’s features—like curved fingers, a high arm-to-leg ratio, and inner ear structure—are more suited to tree-dwelling, similar to modern apes.

3. Homo habilis (Early Human?)

   • Claim: Labeled as a bridge between apes and humans.

   • Counterpoint: Many experts now believe Homo habilis is actually a mix of different species’ bones. Some fossils are clearly ape-like, while others resemble modern humans, making it unreliable as a transitional species.

What Does the Fossil Record Actually Show?

Rather than a gradual evolution, the fossil record overwhelmingly shows that species appear fully formed and distinct, with no clear transitional forms between major kinds. This aligns with Genesis 1:21:

“So God created great sea creatures and every living thing that moves, according to their kind…” (NKJV)

The evidence supports the idea that life was created “according to its kind,” not as the result of slow, evolutionary changes.

Scientific Insights the Bible Knew First

1. The Earth is Suspended in Space

   • Bible: “He stretches out the north over empty space; He hangs the earth on nothing.” (Job 26:7)

   • Science: Ancient cultures believed the earth sat on an animal or foundation. We now know it floats in space, held by gravity.

2. The Earth is Round

   • Bible: “It is He who sits above the circle of the earth…” (Isaiah 40:22)

   • Science: Once thought flat, the Earth is now known to be spherical.

3. The Universe Had a Beginning

   • Bible: “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.” (Genesis 1:1)

   • Science: The Big Bang Theory affirms that the universe had a starting point, contradicting ancient beliefs of an eternal universe.

4. Stars are Innumerable

   • Bible: “As the host of heaven cannot be numbered…” (Jeremiah 33:22)

   • Science: There are billions of galaxies with countless stars—impossible to number.

5. Ocean Currents Exist

   • Bible: “…the fish of the sea that pass through the paths of the seas.” (Psalm 8:8)

   • Science: The discovery of ocean currents confirmed these defined “paths” in the sea.

6. The Hydrologic (Water) Cycle

   • Bible: “All the rivers run into the sea… to the place from which the rivers come, there they return again.” (Ecclesiastes 1:7)

   • Science: Describes the water cycle of evaporation, condensation, and rainfall.

7. Air Has Weight

   • Bible: “He imparted weight to the wind…” (Job 28:25)

   • Science: Once thought weightless, air is now known to have mass and pressure.

Final Thoughts

These biblical insights align with many scientific truths—centuries or even millennia before they were discovered by modern science. This doesn’t make the Bible a science book, but it does offer compelling evidence that it may come from a source far greater than man’s understanding.

So, does modern science disprove the Bible? Not at all. In fact, it often confirms it—just later.
