The Attributes of God

Have you ever stopped to think about who God truly is? Not just in a vague, general sense, but deeply—His nature, His character, and what He reveals about Himself? I’ve found that the more I seek to understand God’s attributes, the stronger my faith becomes. It’s not just about knowing facts—it’s about knowing Him personally.

Why Does This Matter?

In our walk with God, everything hinges on who He is. If we don’t truly know His nature, how can we trust Him? If we see Him as distant and unpredictable, our faith will be shaky. But if we understand that He is loving, just, all-powerful, and unchanging, our confidence in Him grows.

Think about it—when life gets hard, what do we hold onto? If we know God is faithful, we can stand firm. If we know He is all-knowing, we can trust His plan even when we don’t understand it. If we know He is merciful, we can run to Him when we fail instead of hiding in shame.

God’s Names Reveal Who He Is

Many people think of “God” as His name, but in the Bible, God reveals Himself through many names. These names are not just titles but descriptions of His very nature. They show different aspects of His character, helping us understand Him better.

One of the most powerful names God reveals is I AM. When Moses asked for God’s name at the burning bush, He answered:

“I AM WHO I AM.” Then He added, ‘Say this to the people of Israel: I AM has sent me to you.'” (Exodus 3:14, NLT)

This name, I AM, means that God is eternal, self-existent, and unchanging. He is not defined by time, circumstances, or human understanding. He simply is. Whatever we need—strength, peace, provision—He is the source of it all.

Jesus and I AM

What’s even more incredible is that Jesus used this same name to describe Himself. In John 8:58, He said:

“I tell you the truth, before Abraham was even born, I AM!”

This was a direct claim to divinity. Jesus wasn’t just saying He existed before Abraham—He was identifying Himself as the eternal God. This is why the religious leaders immediately picked up stones to kill Him (John 8:59). They knew exactly what He was saying.

Throughout the Gospels, Jesus expanded on I AM to show different aspects of who He is:

  • “I am the bread of life.” (John 6:35) – He sustains us.
  • “I am the light of the world.” (John 8:12) – He guides us.
  • “I am the good shepherd.” (John 10:11) – He cares for us.
  • “I am the resurrection and the life.” (John 11:25) – He conquers death.
  • “I am the way, the truth, and the life.” (John 14:6) – He is our only path to God.

Jesus wasn’t just a teacher or a prophet—He was, and is, the I AM.

How Do We Understand God’s Attributes?

God has revealed Himself in several ways:

  1. Through Scripture – The Bible describes God’s character in action. We see His holiness in Isaiah’s vision (Isaiah 6), His love in John 3:16, and His justice throughout the Old Testament.

  2. Through His Names – Each name of God in the Bible tells us something about who He is:

    • Jehovah-Jireh – “The Lord Will Provide” (Genesis 22:14)
    • Jehovah-Rapha – “The Lord Who Heals” (Exodus 15:26)
    • Jehovah-Shalom – “The Lord Is Peace” (Judges 6:24)
    • El Shaddai – “God Almighty” (Genesis 17:1)
    • Adonai – “Lord, Master” (Psalm 16:2)
  3. Through Experience – The more we walk with God, the more we see His attributes personally. When He provides in impossible situations, we know Him as Jehovah-Jireh. When He brings peace in chaos, we recognize Him as Jehovah-Shalom.

  4. Through Jesus Christ – Jesus is the fullest revelation of God’s character. When we look at Him, we see the heart of the Father.

Drawing Closer to God

Knowing about God isn’t the same as knowing Him. Understanding His attributes helps us move beyond a surface-level faith into a deep, unshakable relationship. It changes how we pray, how we trust, and how we live.

When we know God is sovereign, we can rest in His control.
When we know He is just, we can leave vengeance to Him.
When we know He is love, we can trust that His plans are good—even when we don’t see it yet.

The more we understand His attributes, the more we will love and trust Him. And the more we love and trust Him, the more our lives will reflect who He truly is.

Bible Verses on God’s Names and Attributes

Here are some verses that reveal His nature:

  • God is unchanging – “I am the Lord, and I do not change.” (Malachi 3:6)
  • God is our provider – “And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:19)
  • God is our healer – “I am the Lord who heals you.” (Exodus 15:26)
  • God is our peace – “The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you; the Lord turn his face toward you and give you peace.” (Numbers 6:24-26)
  • God is our shepherd – “The Lord is my shepherd; I have all that I need.” (Psalm 23:1)
